The Masters isn't always about great shots and the accompanying roars. Augusta National easily can expose the flaws of even the best players in the world, and sometimes the spectators' groans can reverberate through the pines.
Here is a list of the 10 worst shots in Masters history.
1. Scott Hoch
Year: 1989
Hole: 10th
Round: Playoff
Hoch's par putt on the first playoff hole would have won him the 1989 Masters. Instead, his miss extended his playoff with Nick Faldo, who made birdie on the next hole to win the first of his three green jackets.
2. Seve Ballesteros
Year: 1986
Hole: 15th
Round: Fourth
Chasing Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros was in an ideal position: in the middle of the 15th fairway with a 4-iron in his hands. But he his second shot so badly that he probably didn't know whether to tell the ball to get up or get down, short of the pond. It landed in the middle of the water, drowning his chances.
3. Ray Floyd
Year: 1990
Hole: 11th
Round: Playoff
There must be something about Nick Faldo that brings out the worst in his opponents. One year after Scott Hoch's missed putt, Ray Floyd pulled a 7-iron into the pond left of the 11th green to give Faldo his second title.
4. Arnold Palmer
Year: 1961
Hole: 18th
Round: Fourth
Arnold Palmer needed par on the 18th to win his second consecutive Masters. He even accepted a congratulatory handshake on his way to the green, where he found his ball half-buried in a bunker. He skulled the bunker shot and made double bogey to lose to Gary Player.
5. Greg Norman
Year: 1996
Hole: 18th
Round: Fourth
After giving up a six-shot lead to playing partner Nick Faldo, Norman still had a chance to apply some pressure on the 16th tee. He was two shots behind, and a good tee could have set up birdie. Instead, he hooked it into the pond, giving Faldo his third green jacket.
6. Tom Weiskopf
Year: 1980
Hole: 12th
Round: First
After hitting his tee shot into Rae's Creek, Weiskopf dropped a ball tried to hit a perfect wedge instead of playing a safe shot onto the green. After hitting a second ball into the creek, Weiskopf stubbornly tried to hit the same shot from the same spot, finally hitting the green on his sixth attempt.
7. Curtis Strange
Year: 1985
Hole: 13th
Round: Fourth
After a first-round 80, Strange battled back and by the time he was ready to his his second shot on the 13th, he had a two-shot lead. He went for the greend and found the water, making bogey. Strange also hit his second into the water on 15th, and finished two strokes behind Bernhard Langer.
8. Len Mattiace
Year: 2003
Hole: 10th
Round: Playoff
After a brilliant final round of 65 to tie Mike Weir for the lead, Len Mattiace looked like a hacker in the playoff. It is difficult to pick which shot was worse: the second shot that he yanked into the trees or the par putt that he nearly ran off the green.
9. Jeff Maggert
Year: 2003
Hole: 4th
Round: Fourth
Starting the day with a two-shot lead over eventual winner Mike Weir, Maggert drove into a fairway bunker on the short 4th. His second shot hit the lip of the bunker before hitting his chest, a two-stroke penalty. He finished five strokes behind.
10. Tiger Woods
Year: 2005
Hole: 13th
Round: First
Woods putted his eagle attempt off the green and into the creek next to the green. The shot, that led to bogey, contributed to his first-round 74. But Woods recovered to win his fourth green jacket in a playoff over Chris DiMarco.
